Celebrating the End of the School Year Inclusively

Dear parents and care givers,
You made it! The middle of June is fast approaching, which means classroom party sign ups are being sent out and summer vacation is just around the corner. I can hardly believe those words as I type them! As I am a planner by nature, I do like to try and be prepared for things well in advance, classroom parties included. These days we have to be mindful of so many different sensitivities when sending our kids with snacks, so to create some ease I decided to compile a list of allergy friendly ideas! Of course, they mostly centre around chocolate :) . The ideas in this list will avoid dairy, gluten, or egg. Often all three! Try not to drool on your keyboard.
1. Dark chocolate dipped strawberries - We get calls at our store all the time asking if we carry chocolate dipped strawberries. We do not, but we do have the right kinds of chocolate so you can dip them yourself! Just be sure to wash and thoroughly dry the strawberries before dipping them, and they should be enjoyed same day as the washed strawberries will shrink and pull away from the chocolate shell.
2. Dark chocolate drizzled popcorn - popcorn is a huge favourite, but it does not have to be covered in butter! For a savoury version, use coconut oil in place of butter, and shake salt on top. We enjoy this at my house!
3. Decadent brownies - For a typical fudgy brownie, we can't avoid the eggs (yolks are amazing things!). However, there are several recipes out there that are gluten free, and can easily be made dairy free (replace the butter with a dairy free alternative). As a note, for celiac students be sure your cornstarch is certified gluten free.
Here is my favourite recipe:
4. Fruit kebabs - Easy to make, healthy, and very popular! Fruit kebabs are a smart choice. Just be careful with those pointy sticks! Oh, and maybe sprinkle some dark chocolate shavings on top right before serving (for good measure)...
5. Gluten free tortilla chips and mild salsa - Every time I come home with a Costco bag of gluten free tortilla chips, my kids (and their friends) can't wait to devour them. I don't know why they are so good, but they are...
6. Monkey tails - Our school is near enough to a splash park that during the last week of school, the students get to visit often. Frozen bananas dipped in dark chocolate would be a wonderful snack while at the splash park! Just remember to decorate with lots of sprinkles...
7. Dark chocolate dipped ripple chips - Thats right, I am telling you to dip your potato chips in dark chocolate. The sweet and salty combo will be a fun addition to your classroom party!
There are many ideas to choose from when trying to be sensitive to allergies, it does not have to be as complicated as it seems! Just remember, the most important addition to a party is YOU! If you can make it but didn't sign up for snacks, show up anyway. Your child will remember your presence, not the snacks. Happy party-ing!

Does anyone remember the jelly roll? I have made only a handful in my baking days, but had fun each time I did. It is one of those desserts that doesn't need much fussing to look beautiful. The beauty is in the slicing and serving, that delicate pinwheel full of possibilities!

In my home, we are food conscious. I try to be mindful of what we feed our bodies, how it affects us, and where our food is coming from. The iconic chocolate bunny comes with so many exciting memories...but where does it come from?
