Camp Alexo, Women of Excellence and Jazzercise!

July 12, 2014

I'm happiest when my plate is full - I like action! During the Summer months, I usually try to relax a bit but this year there' just no slowing down!

I kicked off the Summer by volunteering at Big Brothers Big Sisters Weekend Warrior Weekend for Kids at Camp Alexo. June 5 - 8, 2014. It was important to me to participate in the restoration of Camp Alexo because I wanted to see the money we raised with the Celebrity Dance Off be put to good use. That weekend, over 300 volunteers worked at Camp Alexo to rebuild buildings, roads and furniture to restore the 30 year old run down camp that so many youth look forward to every Summer. I got to help build bunk beds which was a first for me. I've never built furniture without an allen key before!

I also had the honour of being awarded the 2014 Women of Excellence Award for Entrepreneurship. Having only been living in Red Deer for 3 1/2 years, this was a huge honour for me. The Women of Excellence Awards are managed by the Red Deer and District Community Foundation. This organization does amazing work for the people of our community. They announced the launch of a new "Giving Circle" endowment fund for which they are currently seeking donors. For more information, please visit their website.

I also did a little something for myself! I got re-certified as a Jazzercise instructor! I've been Jazzercising off and on for 23 years and have always had a love for dance fitness. I taught dance fitness in Edmonton before I moved to Red Deer and really wanted to get back into it. Luckily, we have an awesome Jazzercise centre right here in Red Deer. Come by one of my classes sometime!

This was just a snapshot of highlights from three weeks out of the Summer...I can't wait to see what is around the corner!
